Intro to Silversmithing in the Southwest Tradition

This is a hands-on course in the basics of silver jewelry making and lapidary. Techniques are demonstrated, but learning comes from actually doing the work. Problem solving is a big part of this learning process. Studio work will be supplemented by demonstration, discussion, visiting instructors and visits to selected galleries. Students will leave the course with a number of pieces of wearable art and a discovery of their own creative potential.

Beginning Silversmithing

Students will learn the basic techniques of silversmithing: sawing, soldering, cabochon stone setting, polishing and finishing, and safety practices for each. The result will be several pieces of jewelry or other objects that will provide pride and pleasure to their creator.

Students will work under the tutelage of instructors who are well qualified and experienced in the creation of silver and gemstone jewelry. A maximum class size of 12 provides an excellent student-to-teacher ratio. Afternoon sessions are available to those who wish. A lab fee included in the registration will cover the coast of consumable materials and incidental items.

Stone, Shell and Silver - (Intermediate & Advanced)

Learn to create silver mountings for inlay and channel work. Use channels made of sterling silver with colored stones, such as lapis, coral, turquoise; and red, purple, yellow and white shell in unique combinations. This technique has been taught in New Mexico for years, and this course will train new/old jewelers to pursue this great hobby/profession.
